Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Thursday sought a response from the principal secretary of the Home Department and various high-level police officials in the case of the alleged custodial death of a security guard.

Apart from the principal secretary, a Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice N Rajeshwar Rao, sent notices to the director general of police TS, commissioner of police, Cyberabad, the DCP and the SHO of Madhapur and Gachibowli police stations respectively directing them to respond to the notices within four weeks.

Acting CJ Abhinand Kumar Shavili, while issuing notices, observed that the lock-up torture that led to the death of the security guard, working for a construction company at Nanakramguda, Gachibowli on July 16, is very unfortunate and disturbing.

Advocate Rapolu Bhaskar had written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, on the news in a media report which highlighted the death of Nitish Kumar. As per the report, Nitish, a native of Bihar, was a security guard working for a construction company in Nanakramguda, Gachibowli. He was picked up by the Gachibowli police for interrogation in a case where the security guard was said to be involved in a scuffle with the workers at the construction company. Nitish was said to have stopped the workers from going out late at night for consuming liquor, as it was against the rules of the company.

Nitish Kumar was confined to lockup for three days in the name of interrogation and later he was shifted to Gandhi Hospital, where he died within 10 minutes of reaching the hospital. The media report said that Nitish died due to police torture but the police claimed that he died due to a heart attack.

The advocate petitioner sought a direction to the state to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakhs to the kin of the deceased security guard, probe the alleged lock-up death and also initiate action against police personnel, who are responsible for the death of the deceased.

After hearing the arguments, the case was adjourned for four weeks.
