Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Monday issued notices to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and IT major Capgemini in a writ petition alleging wrongful alteration of an employee’s last working day in official EPF records and demanding Rs 2.39 lakh to correct it.

The case, WP No. 7016 of 2026, was filed by Mahesh R, a former employee of Capgemini, who alleged that the company deliberately updated an incorrect Last Working Day Date (LWDD) in the EPFO portal, causing serious prejudice to his employment record.

The matter has been posted for further hearing after two weeks.

Allegation of wrongful last working date update

According to the petitioner, Mahesh resigned from Capgemini on November 27, 2021. However, the company allegedly updated his last working day in the EPFO records as April 6, 2022.

The petitioner contended that despite repeated representations, the company demanded Rs 2.39 lakh to correct the alleged discrepancy. He argued that such actions are being used as a pressure tactic against former employees.

Advocate Vijay Gopal appeared on behalf of the petitioner.

Emerging scam in IT sector, petition claims

The writ petition further alleged that similar practices are occurring in several IT companies across India, where HR departments intentionally update incorrect last working dates in EPF records and later seek money from employees to rectify them.

The petitioner described this as an emerging pattern of exploitation, taking advantage of procedural loopholes in the EPFO system.

Challenge to EPFO’s public display of employment history

In addition to the LWDD issue, the petition also challenges the EPFO’s practice of displaying employees’ complete employment history in the public domain.

The petitioner argued that making employment details accessible without adequate safeguards violates the fundamental right to privacy of employees. He has sought directions to the EPFO to stop such practices and introduce privacy protections.

Employees have no control over updating LWDD

The petition highlights a key procedural concern: employees do not have the authority to correct or update their Last Working Day Date on the EPFO portal. Only employers are empowered to make such changes.

The petitioner contended that this lack of employee control is being misused by certain companies, leaving affected individuals with no effective remedy.

The High Court has directed both the EPFO and Capgemini to respond to the allegations. Further proceedings are expected after two weeks.
