Telangana HC slams govt for not appointing chairman, members of SHRC

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court slammed the BRS government for not appointing the chairman and members of the State Human Rights Commission.

A division bench of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji lambasted the government for not appointing the chairman and members to TSHRC despite issuing notices on April 18.

ā€œHuman Rights Commission in Telangana is dysfunctional as there is no chairman and members. It is a very important institutionā€¦ it is completely desertedā€¦ Section 22 of the Human Rights Act, 1993 mandates the state to appoint members and chairman to the Human Rights Commissionā€¦ We are forced to summon the Chief Secretary of the state to the court on this issueā€¦ it is not the case that there are no human rights violations,ā€ Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan told Harender Prasad, a special government pleader, who was present in the Court.

Harender Prasad told the court that he would come up with a government response.

On April 18, the court issued notices to the Chief Secretary and made it clear that the pendency of this PIL would not be a bar for the BRS government in appointing the chairman and members to the Telangana State Human Rights Commission.

The matter has been adjourned till July 21.
