By Newsmeter Network Published on 19 May 2023 2:49 AM GMTHyderabad: Telangana High Court has stayed the government's order granting permission for the installation of late NTR's statue at Lakkaram Lake in Khammam.
On Thursday, Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili directed the BRS government not to install the statue till further orders.
The court was hearing a Lunch Motion Petition filed by Bharata Yadava Samithi, All India Yadava Samithi, Adibatla Srikala Peetham, Hyderabad, and others challenging the BRS government’s decision to allow the installation of NTR's statue.
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar is the Coordinator of the Committee which got permission from the District Collector and Municipal Commissioner, Khammam.
"The state cannot erect/install a statue of late NTR in Lakkaram Lake (which is a tourism spot),” the court said.
The court stayed the installation of the statue till further orders.
Apart from the Lunch Motion, another writ petition was also listed before Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili with a similar plea.
This statue was to be unveiled on May 28 on the late leader’s 100th birthday.
The counsel for the petitioners contended that installing late NTR’s statue depicting him Lord Krishna goes against the Supreme Court order and the circular issued by the Telangana government. The order prohibits the installation of statues in public places.
Petitioners said they do not have any objection to the erection of the NTR statue, but the late leader cannot be depicted as Lord Krishna as it hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus, particularly the Yadava community.
The court later issued notices to the respondents.
