The notification highlighted that only ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution IP’ is permitted for sale to patients by retail medical shops
By Newsmeter Network Published on 5 Feb 2024 11:34 AM GMTHyderabad: In a recent development, the Drugs Control Administration of Telangana has issued a directive to regulate the sale of hydrogen peroxide solution, in adherence to the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The directive stated that retail medical shops are prohibited from selling ‘hydrogen peroxide solution' labelled as ‘laboratory reagent; to patients.
Regulating price
The notification highlighted that only ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution IP’ is permitted for sale to patients by retail medical shops. The approved solution must comply with the standards outlined in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP-2022). The drug, utilised for antiseptic and therapeutic purposes, falls under the category of controlled substances.
The directive reinforced that ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 6%’ is subject to price control regulations as per the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. The maximum retail price (MRP) for this solution should align with the price determined by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA).
Stringent action against violators
The Drugs Control Administration of Telangana has raised concerns about the improper sale of ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution’ labelled as ‘Laboratory Reagent’ by retail medical shops to patients. Such actions contravene the established provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
To ensure compliance, the administration emphasised that hydrogen peroxide solutions sold to patients must conform to the standards set by the Indian Pharmacopoeia and bear the product name ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution IP.’ Any deviation from these guidelines may result in stringent legal actions against violators, as per the law.
A representative from the Drugs Control Administration stated, “Retail medical shops and manufacturers of hydrogen peroxide solution are required to strictly adhere to the specified regulatory requirements. Stringent action shall be taken as per the law against violators.”
