Hyderabad: Telangana sailors from the Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCH) excelled at the recently-held National Sailing Championships at the sub-junior (under 16) level at Mumbai. Sailors from Telangana secured five out of the top 11 positions and won three medals.

The National Sailing Championships in the sub-juniors were held at Mumbai’s Chowpatty Beach, where the wind condition was light to medium on January 15.

Deekshita Komaravelly of Rasoolpura in Hyderabad got the bronze medal for her overall performance and gold medal in the girls’ contest.

With two more medals in the bag, Deekshita is now certain of a position in the national squad, which will represent India at various international tourneys in the coming months.

Another sailor Banny Bongur, also from Rasoolpura, Hyderabad, missed the gold by just a few points and won the silver medal. He too has qualified for the national squad.

Both Deekshita and Banny are from Udbhav School and are being coached at The YCH Sports Foundation at Hussain Sagar.

Other sailors from Telangana including Govardhan Pallara, Lahiri Komaravelly and Rizwan Mohammad finished 8, 9 and 11 spots. Their next goal is participating in the nationals at Shillong in March and the team is being coached to create history in the Northeast with a preparation plan in place.

“We expect this year to be a huge success for our teams and hopefully they will be able to crack some international events very soon,” said their coach Suheim Sheikh.
