Hyderabad: The Telangana government has allocated Rs 1,500 crore in the Telangana State Budget for the ambitious Musi Riverfront Development project.

The State government is positioning the project as a flagship urban renewal initiative aimed at rejuvenating Hyderabad’s historic river while boosting infrastructure and livability across the city.

‘Bharat Future City’ on 30,000 acres

In a major announcement during the budget session, the government proposed the development of ‘Bharat Future City’ spanning 30,000 acres.

The project will feature radial roads, a greenfield national highway connecting to Machilipatnam Port, underground power infrastructure and eco-friendly smart grids.

The initiative is envisioned as a model of sustainable, future-ready urban development, the deputy chief minister said.

Musi Rejuvenation across 55-km stretch

Presenting the 2026–27 Budget in the Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced a comprehensive plan to revive the Musi River over a 55-km stretch.

The first phase will cover the river from Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar to Gandhi Sarovar. To ensure sustained water flow, 2.5 TMC of water will be diverted into the Musi from the Godavari project.

At the confluence of the Esa and Musi rivers, the government will develop the prestigious Gandhi Sarovar project, which includes river cleaning, flood management systems, riverfront beautification and public recreational spaces.

Additionally, Rs 2,654 crore has been allocated under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) scheme to strengthen urban infrastructure.

Metro expansion gains momentum

An allocation of Rs 600 crore has been earmarked for Phase II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. Currently serving around 5 lakh passengers daily, the metro network is set to expand to the Old City, Shamshabad Airport, and beyond Hitec City under upcoming phases.

The minister termed the government’s decision to take over the Metro project from L&T as a bold, people-centric move, emphasising the urgent need for expansion in a rapidly growing city.

Three-tier growth strategy: CURE, PURE, RARE

The state outlined a structured economic development model:

CURE (Core Urban Region Economy): Focus on IT, Artificial Intelligence, global capability centres, startups and financial services within the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

PURE (Planned Urban & Regional Economy): Development of manufacturing industries, MSME clusters, logistics hubs and industrial parks between the ORR and Regional Ring Road (RRR).

RARE (Rural & Agricultural Region Economy): Promotion of value-added agriculture, food processing and eco-tourism beyond the RRR.

This strategy aims to drive balanced growth and large-scale employment generation across regions.
