Hyderabad: Telangana government has decided to introduce road safety in the school curriculum in a bid to curb accidents

The initiative aims to create awareness among children from a young age, shaping them into responsible road users in the future.

Why the initiative?

Every year, thousands of people lose their lives in road mishaps across the state. Officials point out that most fatalities occur due to neglect of basic safety measures such as not wearing helmets, avoiding seatbelts, or ignoring traffic rules.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar recently announced the government’s decision to address this issue through education.

Modules across all levels

The government is preparing a comprehensive framework to introduce road safety lessons from the primary level up to intermediate classes, possibly from the next academic year.

The content will be divided into three categories: Classes 1 to 5, Classes 6 to 10, and the Intermediate level, a senior transport department official said.

Key focus areas

Depending on the age group, students will be taught pedestrian safety measures, importance of helmets and seatbelts, traffic rules and road discipline, and responsible driving habits.

Teaching methods

To make the learning effective, authorities plan to use interactive teaching methods. Case studies of real accidents will be explained through audio-visual presentations, helping students understand the consequences of negligence on the road.
