Telangana’s missing children: HC takes suo moto cognizance, issues notice to CS, DGP, others

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Wednesday asked Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Home Department, Principal Secretary, Women & Child Welfare Department, and the Director General of Police to furnish reasons for missing children and steps taken to thwart such incidents.

A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti issued notices to the government and asked to file a response within four weeks.

The court was adjudicating the suo motu PIL based on the news item about missing kids. The court asked the government pleader that this is a serious issue.

Telangana is ranked 8th in the country in missing children. As many as 654 children including 391 girls, went missing in 2022. They remain untraced. As per the records of the National Crime Records Bureau, 3,443 children went missing in 2022 and Telangana witnessed an average of nearly 10 children missing each day, with one case registered for every 10,000 residents.
