TGHRC probes illegal surrogacy racket, Gurukul food poisoning in Telangana
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of two serious incidentsā illegal surrogacy racket in Secunderabad and food poisoning incident at Gurukul School in Nagarkurnool district that have recently come to light through media reports.
The Commission under the chairmanship of Dr Justice Shameem Akther has directed the concerned authorities to submit detailed reports on both matters by August 28, 2025.
Illegal surrogacy and baby-selling allegations
In the first case, the Commission took cognizance of disturbing reports published in various newspapers on July 27 and 28, 2025, regarding alleged illegal surrogacy practices and baby-selling operations at the Universal Srushti Fertility Centre in Secunderabad.
The allegations also extend to associated clinics operating in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam. Terming the allegations as a serious violation of ethical and legal norms, the Commission has sought a comprehensive report from the Principal Secretary, Health, Medical & Family Welfare Department, Government of Telangana.
The report is to be submitted by August 28, 2025.
Food poisoning incident at Gurukul School
In the second case, the TGHRC has acted upon news reports published on July 28, 2025, highlighting a food poisoning incident involving students at the Mahatma Jyothiba Pule BC Welfare Gurukul School near Uyyalawada in Nagarkurnool district.
The incident has raised grave concerns about food safety and the well-being of students in state-run residential schools. Taking serious note of the situation, the Commission has directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana, to furnish a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the incident, including preventive and corrective measures being taken.
The Commission stated that both matters involve critical issues of public interest and human rights, and appropriate follow-up action will be taken upon receipt of the reports.
