Hyderabad: In the vibrant city of Hyderabad, a unique choir is rewriting the musical narrative. The Hyderabad Voices, co-founded by Ashrita Dā€™Souza and Shakila Dausi, stands out as the cityā€™s first secular choir, uniting individuals from diverse walks of life to celebrate the universal language of music.

On December 20, the choir delivered a stunning performance at Lamakaan, captivating a full house with renditions of timeless carols and diverse genres. This spectacular show not only celebrated the spirit of the season but also highlighted the choirā€™s mission of inclusivity and unity.

In an exclusive interview, the founders, along with other members, shared insights into their journey, musical approach, and future aspirations.

Founding and Vision

Q: What inspired you to start The Hyderabad Voices? What does it mean for you to be the only secular choir in Hyderabad?

Ashrita: We both love music and around this time last year, we began exploring the idea of creating a choir that was different from the norm. By February, we finally started The Hyderabad Voices. Being the only secular choir in Hyderabad means everything to us. Choirs are often associated with churches or religion, but we wanted to break that narrative and show that anyone who loves music can be part of a choir.

Q: How did the idea of bringing together singers from different walks of life come about; what has been the most rewarding part of this journey?

Ashrita: It stemmed from our passion for music and teaching. Bringing together individuals from various backgrounds and singing as one cohesive unit has been immensely rewarding. The recognition as Hyderabadā€™s only secular choir is the cherry on top.

Q: Why was it important for you to establish a choir that sings all genres and is inclusive of everyone?

Shakila: Music is universal and we wanted to reflect that through our choir. Inclusivity and diversity are at the core of what we do.

Musical Approach and Performances

Q: How do you choose your repertoire? What influences your decision to include songs from Broadway, pop, rock and even religious genres?

Ashrita: Our repertoire is a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces that resonate with our members and the audience. We aim to include something for everyone, ensuring variety and representation.

Q: What makes this Christmas carol show at Lamakaan special, and what can the audience look forward to?

Shakila: The showā€™s theme of togetherness, love, and unity perfectly aligns with the spirit of the season and what our choir represents. Every song was carefully selected to reflect these values, making the performance memorable for the audience.

Q: Can you share a bit about the process of preparing for performances, especially with a group of singers ranging from novices to professionals?

Ashrita: Preparing for performances is always a mix of challenges and rewards. Working with singers of varying experience levels requires patience and coordination but seeing it all come together on stage makes it worth it.

Inclusivity and Community

Q: What challenges have you faced in maintaining the secular and inclusive identity of the choir? How have you overcome them?

Shakila: We havenā€™t faced any major challenges so far. People have embraced our vision wholeheartedly, and itā€™s been wonderful to build a community focused on music and unity.

Q: How has being part of The Hyderabad Voices impacted the lives of the members, both personally and musically?

Ashrita: Many members have shared how being part of the choir has given them a sense of belonging and peace. Itā€™s heartwarming to see music positively impacting their lives.

Personal Reflections

Q: Could you share a memorable moment or performance that has stood out since you started the choir?

Ashrita: The feeling we experience after finishing a performance is unmatched. Itā€™s always amazing to see a full house completely immersed in our music.

Q: Whatā€™s the most touching feedback youā€™ve received from the audience or choir members?

Shakila: One of the best compliments weā€™ve received is that our shows feel too short, even though theyā€™re 1.5 hours long. Itā€™s flattering to know that people enjoy our performances so much that they want more.

Q: Whatā€™s the dynamic like between members with varying levels of experience? How do you ensure everyone feels equally valued?

Ashrita: We prioritize collaboration and mutual respect. Every member, whether novice or professional, plays a vital role in the choirā€™s success.

Looking Ahead

Q: How do you envision the growth of The Hyderabad Voices in the future? Are there any specific goals or milestones youā€™re working towards?

Shakila: We aim to put our choir on the map of India and establish ourselves as pioneers in the secular choir space. We also hope to perform outside Hyderabad and reach a wider audience.

Christmas and Beyond

Q: Christmas is a time for joy and unity. How does The Hyderabad Voices embody this spirit through its music?

Ashrita: Our music reflects the spirit of unity, love and togetherness, which are central to Christmas and to what our choir represents.

Q: Do you have a personal favourite Christmas carol in the setlist, and why does it resonate with you?

Shakila: My favourite is ā€œCarol of the Bells.ā€ Itā€™s such a dynamic and powerful piece that truly showcases our choirā€™s strengths.

Q: What message do you hope the audience takes away from your upcoming Christmas show?

Ashrita: We hope the audience leaves feeling a sense of joy, unity, and an appreciation for the power of music to bring people together.

Behind the Scenes

The Hyderabad Voices is a collaborative effort that includes talented individuals like pianist Nirvaan, who joined the choir when their regular pianist was injured. Nirvaan, a professional composer and musician, described his experience with the choir as enriching and unique. His mother is also a choir member, adding a personal touch to his involvement.

Internationally, Ashritaā€™s sister, Ankna Arockiam, brings a global perspective with her extensive background in Western and Indian classical music. Currently based in Glasgow, Anknaā€™s work in music education and advocacy aligns with the choirā€™s mission of inclusivity.

From their beautiful renditions of ā€œMary, Did You Know,ā€ ā€œCarol of the Bells,ā€ and ā€œThatā€™s Christmas to Me,ā€ to their commitment to unity through music, The Hyderabad Voices is more than just a choirā€”itā€™s a movement celebrating diversity and harmony. As they continue to make waves in the musical landscape, this choir is a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
