Hyderabad: Diwali is a joyous festival with colorful lights and crackers. The effects of firecrackers are long-lasting. Not only do they cause various kinds of pollution but also affect animals.

Not everyone enjoys the loud cracker, especially animals. It is pertinent to note that the loud noise of firecrackers can cause distress to animals.

Often, multiple stray dogs and cats are found with severe burn injuries. Some pets are so traumatised by the sounds that the loud noise affects their hearing as well. Some pets often run away from their homes in a bid to get away from the loud sounds and often get lost.

"It's not just the sound of crackers that affects the animals. The toxic smoke emitted by them also has adverse effects on animals. It can cause asthmatic attacks," said Prudhvi Paneeru, the secretary of Citizens for Animals, Hyderabad.

Citizens for Animals is a group of volunteers that provide year-round care to animals. They also provide special care for animals affected by Diwali. "Most cases are of burns, hearing impairment, and trauma. Often, we find lost pets as well," he said.

"Writing a phone number on a dog collar with a waterproof marker will help a lot," added Ashok Gantala, an animal rights activist.

NGOs and activists across the city also find injured birds post-Diwali. Sometimes they also find buffaloes and cows that have fallen into pits.

Muhammed Javeed of People for Animals (PFA), Hyderabad urged everyone to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. "No festival should impact other animals," he said.
