This kind of clothing is not allowed: Puducherry police tell Hyderabad techie

Hyderabad: Pranita Sandela was walking around French Colony in Puducherry on Saturday when she was stopped by two policemen for dressing "inappropriately". "This kind of clothing is not allowed," the cops told Pranita, a techie from Hyderabad, who was wearing a knee-length skirt and a bralette.

Pranita was vacationing in Pondicherry with friends. She said the two policemen kept following the group for around 15 minutes before speaking to them.

"Initially, they didn't come to me but went to one of my friends and noted down her details and phone number. When I intervened, they began lecturing me on my choice of clothes," Pranitha said.

When Pranitha questioned them, the policemen said since the area is a school zone "such clothes" are not allowed. They also told her that someone had complained regarding her attire and hence, they had pursued her.

"They were talking in Tamil. I understand the language a little. I asked them why I cannot dress the way I want but they kept dodging my question and kept reiterating that these kinds of clothes aren't allowed," she said.

"At one point, the police began asking for my phone number. They wouldn't give me a reason as to why they needed it," she added.

"Pondicherry is a tourist place where a lot of foreigners come as well. I asked the police if they stopped foreigners as well but they didn't answer," Panita explained. As the argument between the officers and Pranita unfolded, several people stopped to see what was happening but no one intervened.

When the police officers realised that one of Pranitha's friends was recording the whole affair, they immediately left. "Why can't women wear what they like? Who gives police the right to comment on my character based on my attire?" Pranita asked.
