Hyderabad: Hyderabad is set to witness a new kind of public celebration with Toma Terra, a tomato-themed festival inspired by Spainās La Tomatina. Scheduled for May 11 at Experium Eco Park, the event aims to combine music, dance, and the spectacle of a tomato-throwing battle in a carnival-like setting.
A Local Take on a Global Phenomenon
Toma Terra takes inspiration from La Tomatina, the tomato-throwing festival held annually in BuƱol, Spain. Unlike its Spanish counterpart, which is steeped in decades of tradition, the Hyderabad version introduces elements of local entertainment, including live DJ sets, dance performances, and food stalls.
Tomato Battle and Sustainability Measures
At the heart of the event is the much-anticipated ātomato battle,ā which organisers promise will have an ample supply of tomatoes. Addressing environmental concerns, they added that all tomato waste generated will be converted into manure to be used on the venueās grounds.
Past Controversy and Present Caution
This isnāt the first time India has attempted to recreate La Tomatina. In 2013, a similar event proposed in various Indian cities met with strong opposition from the public. Concerns were raised over food wastage and cultural insensitivity, leading to the cancellation of those events.
To avoid a repeat of that backlash, Toma Terraās organisers are emphasizing sustainability and responsible planning.
Bollywoodās Role in Popularising La Tomatina
La Tomatina became widely known in India after being featured in the 2011 Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Since then, the concept has intrigued many Indians seeking novel recreational experiences.
With safety measures, eco-friendly planning, and diverse entertainment lined up, Toma Terra marks an experimental addition to Hyderabadās event calendar.
Tickets for the event are currently available online.
