Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced to appoint transgenders as traffic volunteers to man busy areas in the city.
The initiative aims to support Hyderabadās traffic police department while addressing concerns over traffic congestion, especially in the cityās bustling areas.
The move is likely to make Hyderabad a model for efficient traffic management. The government aims to make Hyderabad one of Indiaās top five cities with the best traffic management.
Revanth Reddy, who held a meeting with officials, said the services of transgenders should be utilized like home guards at traffic signals to prevent violations, an official release said. He also suggested the deployment of transgender people during 'drunk and drive' checks.
The officials have been asked to finalize a special dress code for transgenders and also salary along the lines of home guards.
The CM directed the officials to implement the decision on an experimental basis at the earliest.
According to the officials, after selection, these candidates would undergo a week-long to 10-day specialized training program. They will receive traffic management skills comparable to those of home guards and traffic police officers. The recruited volunteers will also be provided with a special uniform to distinguish them from other traffic personnel. Additionally, the government will offer a monthly stipend to the volunteers, ensuring both financial security and a sense of societal respect for the community.
The announcement has sparked positive reactions from transgender individuals and LGBTQ+ activists. Many have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a step toward societal recognition and empowerment for the transgender community.
