Triple suicide in Amberpet: 4 held for harassing family over Rs 57 lakh loan taken for biryani business
Hyderabad: Four illegal money lenders were arrested by Amberpet police on Monday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a family of three in Bapu Nagar.
The family ended their lives last week after reportedly being harassed over repayment of a Rs 57 lakh loan taken to run a biryani business.
Police said the accused had allegedly subjected the family to severe financial harassment, illegal interest demands and threats, which drove them to take the extreme step.
Triple suicide shocks Amberpet
Disclosing the case details before the media persons here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Secunderabad Zone) Rakshita Krishna Murthy said that the incident came to light on February 24, after Kadgekar Amulya lodged a complaint stating that her father, Kadgekar Ramraj (54), mother Madhavi and younger brother Shashank Raj were found dead at their house in Bapu Nagar.
The DCP said that Ramraj and Shashank were found hanging from ceiling fans in separate rooms, while Madhavi was found lying dead on the bed. “A case was initially registered under Section 194 of the BNSS. During the investigation, we recovered suicide notes from the scene,” she said.
Rs 57 lakh loan for Biryani business
Investigations revealed that the family had borrowed around Rs 57 lakh from private financiers to run ‘King’s Biryani’ outlets at Mallapur and Chakripuram.
The DCP said the accused allegedly charged exorbitant daily interest and subjected the family to continuous harassment over repayment.
The suicide notes, along with statements from relatives and witnesses, indicated that the deceased was under severe mental distress due to persistent threats and humiliation.
Allegations of harassment and threats
Elaborating further, the DCP said that the accused demanded excessive and illegal interest, forcibly obtained blank cheques, promissory notes, MOUs and original land documents, repeatedly threatened and humiliated the family over the phone, and warned of visiting their house to publicly insult them.
Call Data Records also confirmed that on the night of February 23–24, the accused allegedly contacted the family and threatened them with dire consequences if the loan amounts were not repaid. Based on the evidence, the case was altered to Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment to suicide), she added.
Four accused arrested
On March 2, acting on credible information, Amberpet police apprehended four accused:
- Mohd. Wasi Uz Zaman @ Irfan (57), a real estate and scrap businessman from Jawaharnagar, Moulali.
P Rajasekhara Reddy (55), engaged in construction work and residing in Venkateswara Nagar Colony, Moul Ali.
- Mohd. Nawaz (50), businessman from Sudhanagar Colony, Old Safilguda.
- Syed Majeed Hyder (53), electrician from Sadullanagar, Moul Ali.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to lending money at high interest rates and pressuring the family for repayment. They also confessed to forcibly collecting blank cheques and property documents as security, police said.
Key documents seized
Police seized several incriminating materials from the accused, including:
- 12 blank cheques issued by the deceased
- 6 empty promissory notes
- 3 Memorandums of Understanding
- One mortgage-cum-loan agreement
- Original land documents relating to three acres of agricultural land in Gandhimall village, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district
Bond papers and mobile phones were used for alleged threats
Police stated that the sustained harassment, unlawful financial pressure and repeated threats caused severe mental trauma to the family, ultimately leading to the suicides.
All four accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
