DRI seizes Rs 8.9 crore worth hydroponic weed at Hyderabad airport

Hyderabad: In a major drug bust at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs seized 25.45 kilograms of hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 8.9 crore.

Two Indian passengers arriving from Bangkok were arrested in connection with the case.

Eye on international drug trafficking routes

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, officers of DRI Hyderabad Zonal Unit (HZU), in coordination with AIU Hyderabad Customs, intercepted two Indian nationals who had arrived from Bangkok.

The operation was carried out as part of intensified surveillance on international drug trafficking routes.

Contraband recovered from baggage

During a detailed examination of the passengers’ luggage, officials recovered multiple packets containing a greenish, lumpy substance. Preliminary testing confirmed the substance to be hydroponic weed, a high-potency variant of cannabis.

Arrests and legal action

The seized contraband, weighing 25.45 kg and valued at Rs 8.9 crore, was confiscated under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Both passengers were taken into custody and formally arrested.

Authorities stated that further investigation is ongoing to identify the source, network, and intended distribution of the seized narcotics. Officials are also probing possible links to international drug syndicates.
