Two political legacies go head-to-head for Secunderabad Cantt Constituency

Hyderabad: In the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency for the upcoming Assembly elections, two women politicians are vying for the MLA seat, making it an intriguing race, especially considering their influential political backgrounds.

One of the contenders is Lasya Nandita, representing the BRS party. She is the daughter of the late long-time MLA G Sayanna, who passed away a few years ago. Following his demise, there was significant anticipation surrounding the ticket allocation for this constituency.

Ultimately, the BRS party selected Lasya as the candidate. Lasya, who also served as a former corporator in Kavadiguda, spent her formative years observing her fatherā€™s service to the people. Soon she entered the political fray as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate for the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency.

Her previous role as a corporator in Kavadiguda gave her a win in the 2016 Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. However, she narrowly lost to the BJP candidate, Rachana Sri, by a margin of 1,477 votes in 2020.

The Secunderabad Cantonment is the sole SC-reserved constituency in the Hyderabad district, and her father, Sayanna was a five-time MLA.

Challenging Lasya is Vennela, the daughter of the late revolutionary balladeer Gaddar. Vennela actively sought the Congress partyā€™s nomination from the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency for the Assembly elections. In the second list released by the party, she was officially announced as the contestant for the Secunderabad Cantonment.

Vennela mentioned her late fatherā€™s support for the Congress in his final days and his participation in the ā€˜Peopleā€™s Marchā€™ padayatra led by CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka from March to July this year. This election marks Vennelaā€™s debut in politics.

Going forward, it is going to be interesting to see how the two politicians are going to campaign, what their strategy is and how they will win the faith of the public.
