Hyderabad: A notice has been issued to Vijetha Supermarket located in Rainbows Vistas Township in Kaithalapur asking it to shut down within the next seven days.

As per the notice issued by the assistant medical officer of health, Moosapet circle, GHMC, if the store is not closed, action will be initiated under provisions of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act 1955.

The notice was issued after a complaint from one of the township residents, M. Omkesh, stating that the market is selling expired items. He also said there were cockroaches in the store.

"Two days ago, I visited the supermarket and purchased a Mother Dairy lassi on 19 January. I drank the lassi without checking the expiry date. Later, I found that the product had expired nine days ago. When I went back to the shop, I saw that almost all the dairy products were expired," Mr. Omkesh said.

"Apart from the expired dairy products, rats had also eaten the dal, salt, and sugar," he said.

Mr. Omkesh fell sick after consuming the lassi and he hasn't completely recovered yet. He is suffering from vomiting and stomach aches.

He said, "After I filed a complaint, somehow the supermarket owners found out that the food safety officers will be visiting the store on 21 January. Overnight they changed most of their stock and brought in fresh items. But some expired products were still there."

Based on the complaint, the Hyderabad food safety officers raided the outlet.

The complaint was first received on 18 October 2021. After an inspection by the officer concerned, a penalty of Rs. 5,000 was levied against the store after cockroaches were found in the supermarket. A warning had also been issued.

Despite this, residents of the township filed another complaint on 21 January 2022 stating that the outlet is selling expired food products and that there were cockroaches in the store.

The assistant medical officer of health and the food inspector visited the store and found expired food products and cockroaches in the store. Samples of the food have been collected and sent to the lab. The reports are awaited.

The notice stated that due to frequent complaints, the Vijetha Supermarket has been directed to show cause why action should not be initiated against it for the violations.
