Virtusa Foundation restores 3.5-acre Ranglal Kunta in Financial District

Hyderabad: The once-degraded Ranglal Kunta in Hyderabad’s Financial District has been brought back to life, thanks to the sustained restoration efforts of Virtusa Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Virtusa Corporation.

Partnering with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and United Way of Hyderabad, Virtusa transformed the 3.5-acre lake near its campus into a vibrant, sustainable ecosystem that now supports both biodiversity and community life.

As per the company’s public note, the initiative reflects Virtusa’s growing commitment to sustainability and urban environmental rejuvenation, offering a clean and green public space while strengthening the ecological balance of the region.

From neglect to renewal

Once reduced to a sewage-filled dry bed, Ranglal Kunta has now been fully restored with a water-holding capacity of 24 million litres. Over a period of two and a half years, extensive desilting, bund construction, sewage diversion and bio-remediation with aeration systems were carried out.

These efforts have revived the natural ecosystem, welcoming back over 14 native species of birds, butterflies and other fauna. The project has also improved groundwater recharge and microclimate conditions across Hyderabad’s busy Financial District.

Eco-friendly recreational zone

Beyond environmental revival, the rejuvenated lake has become a community-friendly green zone featuring pedestrian walkways, landscaped plantations, gazebos, pergolas and seating areas. A weir gate has been installed to regulate water levels, ensuring long-term ecological balance.

The lakefront now offers employees and residents a peaceful retreat within the city, symbolising Hyderabad’s vision of sustainable and inclusive urban living.

Joint effort for urban sustainability

The restored lake was inaugurated in the presence of Arekapudi Gandhi, MLA, Serilingampally; Hemanth Borkhade, IAS, Zonal Commissioner, GHMC; M. Kavitha, Zonal Commissioner, TGIIC; and Madhuri Duggirala, Vice President, gTech Ads Solutions, Google Hyderabad Site Lead.

Their participation reflected the shared mission of government, corporate, and civic organisations in promoting sustainable urban development.

Corporate commitment to environmental impact

Virtusa CFO Amit Bajoria described the restoration as a reflection of the company’s belief that “progress and purpose can move together.”

“What was once a barren space has now become a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity and community well-being,” Bajoria said. “When organisations, civic bodies, and citizens collaborate with shared intent, transformation becomes visible, lasting, and deeply fulfilling.”

Engineering a sustainable future

The lake restoration is part of Virtusa’s broader sustainability roadmap focused on measurable environmental outcomes. Through continued collaboration and community engagement, the Virtusa Foundation aims to integrate technology and compassion to build resilient ecosystems and empowered communities.

With the revival of Ranglal Kunta, Virtusa has not only reclaimed a natural asset but also demonstrated how corporate responsibility can drive urban sustainability and community well-being, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.
