Wake up NMC! Nizampet residents fill death traps by themselves

Hyderabad, December 13: Pained by the apathetic attitude of authorities, Nizampet residents voluntarily filled the potholes on the Pragathi Nagar road.

Sai Teja, Srinivas Bellam, Raghu, and Ram bought 100 kgs of tar for Rs. 400 to fill the potholes and filled three were potholes.

"They are not potholes, they are death traps," says Sai Teja, a resident of Pragathi Nagar.

Roads in the Nizampet area falling under the Nizampet Municipal Corporation (NMC) have witnessed several accidents due to potholes. The potholes are becoming extremely dangerous especially for the two-wheelers.

Back in 2019, the residents of Nizampet had organized a funeral protest for the roads, 'RIP Pragathi Nagar Roads' wherein they covered the potholes with mud and stones.

"Since 2019, we have been protesting for better roads. Every time there is a public outcry, they just do some temporary work," says Sai Teja.

He also notes that when the Nizampet area was under the GHMC limits, grievances were taken up more quickly but now being a part of the NMC, they are not being properly attended to.

Sai Teja also recalls his accident in 2019 due to a pothole on the road, he fell down from his bike and was badly injured.

"When an accident happens, it is a reminder to the road engineers that they can be booked under Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)," says Sai Teja.

The four are also planning to expand their work to other areas facing similar problems across the city. "Through our actions, we intend to wake up the officials," adds Sai Teja.

Also, they are looking forward to the participation of more interested individuals joining the cause.
