Walking through History: Global Delegates explore heritage walk through the heart of Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s streets have a story to tell, and this weekend, they had an international audience listening.
As part of an ongoing initiative by the Department of Tourism, Government of Telangana, a group of 60 inspiring women delegates from the ‘Global Shapers Community’ took to the streets for a curated heritage walk that brought the city’s rich history to life.
A global gathering in the Old City
The walk, held on April 4, saw a vibrant mix of participants. The delegation was truly global, with representatives flying in from international hubs like Chicago, Malé, Thimphu, and Kandy. They were joined by fellow changemakers from across India, including cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Chennai.
Walking through the bustling lanes from Charminar to the magnificent Chowmahalla Palace, the participants didn’t just see the landmarks, they experienced the layered history of the city.
More than just a walk
The Department of Tourism has been hosting these heritage walks on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month, specifically designed for students, architects, tourists, and history buffs.
“These walks are about more than just sightseeing,” said P. Gouthami, IAS, Managing Director, TGTDC & Director of Tourism. “We want to foster a deeper appreciation for our unique legacy and encourage the preservation of the landmarks that make Hyderabad so special,” the MD added.
An immersive experience
For the participants, the walk was a highlight of their visit. Many expressed how the guided tour helped them understand the intricate blend of cultures that defines Hyderabad. From the architectural marvels of the Qutb Shahi era to the everyday vibrancy of the Old City, the delegates were captivated by the "living history" that continues to breathe through the city’s monuments.
By hosting international delegations, the Department of Tourism aims to position Hyderabad as a premier destination for heritage tourism.
