Hyderabad: Telangana is set to witness another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of widespread showers and thunderstorms as multiple low-pressure systems strengthen over the Bay of Bengal.
Low-pressure over Bay of Bengal
A low-pressure area currently lies over Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha, and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, with a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.
According to the IMD, another fresh system is likely to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25. It is expected to intensify into a depression by September 26 and cross the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 27.
Troughs bringing moisture to Telangana
Meteorologists noted that troughs linked to the system are extending across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and up to the Maharashtra coast. These features are drawing in significant moisture, keeping the southwest monsoon active over Telangana.
Districts on alert
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy districts on September 26.
On September 27, the warning covers Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy.
Extended wet spell ahead
For the next six days, heavy rains are likely at isolated places across Telangana.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected in many districts throughout the week. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph may occur in parts of the state over the next five days.
Rainfall in the last 24 hours
In the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in Bhadradri Kothagudem and Kamareddy districts. Hyderabad, Mahabubabad, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, and Siddipet also experienced heavy showers, with widespread rainfall reported across Telangana.
