Hyderabad: After two weeks of persistent and heavy rainfall across Telangana, the weather pattern is beginning to shift.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has forecasted only light to moderate showers at a few locations in the coming days. According to the latest bulletin issued on Friday, no heavy rainfall is expected across the state until Thursday, June 5.

End of Continuous Thunderstorm Activity

May saw an unusual pattern this year. Instead of the typical heatwaves, the month was dominated by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, particularly active during the first three weeks. This was followed by the early onset of the Southwest Monsoon in the last week of May.

ā€œMay is generally associated with high temperatures and isolated thunderstorms,ā€ said K. S. Sridhar, Meteorologist, IMD-Hyderabad, speaking to NewsMeter. ā€œHowever, this year, the thunderstorm activity was more widespread and persistent, likely influenced by a combination of upper air circulations and the early arrival of monsoonal winds.ā€

The frequent weather alerts issued throughout May included warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across multiple districts in the state.

Yellow Alert for Gusty Winds

Though the rainfall intensity is tapering off, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for gusty winds (30 to 40 kmph) for most Telangana districts until June 5. The alert indicates moderate intensity but does not include any warnings for heavy rain.

ā€œWind activity is expected to continue at moderate speeds. People should remain cautious, especially in areas with weak structures or loose objects that can be displaced,ā€ said Sridhar.

Temperatures to Rise

With the decline in rainfall, daytime temperatures are expected to rise. The Hyderabad MET Department noted that day temperatures will now range between 36°C and 40°C and are not expected to fall below 36°C in the coming days.

ā€œThis is a natural rebound after prolonged cloud cover and rain. Clearer skies allow for more solar radiation to reach the ground, pushing temperatures up,ā€ explained Sridhar.

No Heatwave Warnings This May

In contrast to previous years, no heatwave warnings were issued this May. The frequent rain and cloud cover prevented temperatures from spiking to extreme levels.

ā€œThis May has been climatically unusual for Telangana. We usually prepare for heatwave conditions, especially in interior districts. But this time, consistent weather disturbances kept the heat in check,ā€ said Sridhar.

Looking Ahead

As Telangana transitions from the pre-monsoon to monsoon period, weather agencies will continue to monitor for changes in rainfall patterns and wind speeds. The IMD is expected to release updated advisories closer to the first week of June as more monsoon data becomes available.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official bulletins and take precautions during gusty wind conditions, even in the absence of heavy rainfall.
