Who is ‘Tank Bund Shiva’, Hyderabad lifesaver honored by CM Revanth

CM Revanth hands over ₹5L cheque to guardian of Hussain Sagar, who saved 100 lives

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday handed over a cheque of ₹5 lakh to Gudipalli Shiva, popularly known as ‘Tank Bund Shiva,’ for saving more than 100 lives at Hussain Sagar Lake over the years.

The financial assistance comes as a relief to Shiva, who has been facing health challenges and financial hardship.

But who is the man behind the moniker, and why has his work gained such recognition?

The Guardian of Hussain Sagar

Gudipalli Shiva has spent over two decades as a volunteer diver at the Hussain Sagar Lake. Growing up near the lake, he mastered the art of swimming and diving at a young age. He has made it his mission to save those attempting to end their lives and to assist the police in retrieving bodies from the water.

Shiva is estimated to have saved over 100 lives and recovered thousands of bodies. His deep knowledge of the lake’s currents and hazardous spots has made him an indispensable asset to the local police and disaster management teams, often reaching locations that technical equipment could not.

Selfless service amid personal struggle

Despite his contributions to the city, Shiva has lived a life of modest means. He never charged a fee for saving lives, often relying on small rewards from the police or the families of those he helped.

In recent years, his health began to decline. Years of diving into the polluted waters of the lake led to chronic skin and respiratory issues. News of his deteriorating health and financial struggle recently reached the Chief Minister’s office, prompting immediate intervention.

Recognition by the State

During their meeting, CM Revanth Reddy lauded Shiva’s bravery and humanitarian spirit. In addition to the ₹5 lakh financial aid. The CM directed officials to ensure Shiva receives proper medical treatment and to explore avenues for his family’s long-term welfare.

Further, a government job as a home guard was also offered to his son, Venumadhav, and a double-bedroom house was also sanctioned. Meanwhile, plans were also initiated for a swimming pool near Tank Bund for livelihood.
