Hyderabad: On Tuesday, the Telangana High Court asked the State to explain the reasons for not implementing the Central government scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)’.
While the State government only provides Rs 10,000 per acre to Telangana farmers as compensation for crop loss, the Centre’s scheme provides more benefits, the HC said.
“The state is only granting Rs 10,000 to the farmers per acre as compensation for crop loss. If there is any other scheme, which benefits the farmers more, it should be adopted. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) gives more benefits to the farmers,” said CJ Alok Aradhe.
The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice NV Shravan Kumar, was responding to a PIL by advocate Rapolu Bhaskar seeking a direction to the Telangana government to implement a comprehensive crop insurance scheme across the state, which covers all types of crop issues and benefits the farmers with adequate insurance and financial assistance.
The petitioner in the PIL informed the court that the crops grown on 2.23 lakh acres of land across Telangana were damaged in March and in the last week of April this year and the State has allotted only Rs 10,000 per acre as compensation.
The bench issued notices to the secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India; secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India; chief secretary, TS; principal secretary of Finance and Planning, TS; principal secretary, Revenue, TS; commissioner of Agriculture, TS; and the director of Horticulture, TS; directing them to respond within six weeks.
