Why is it raining in Hyderabad? IMD issues Yellow alert for thunderstorms across Telangana

Hyderabad: As rain began hitting several parts of the city on Tuesday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad issued a Yellow warning, predicting light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across various districts of Telangana for the next few days.

Why is it raining now?

IMD stated that the sudden change in weather is attributed to a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh to North Maharashtra, and another trough persisting from the Gulf of Mannar to North Interior Karnataka.

Immediate forecast for the day

According to the latest nowcast issued at 4 pm on Tuesday by the IMD, light rain and light thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speeds of less than 40 kmph (in gusts) are likely to occur at isolated places in the following districts over the next 2-3 hours.

Areas to be affected include:

- Hyderabad

- Medchal-Malkajgiri

- Rangareddy

- Vikarabad

- Sangareddy

Meanwhile, other districts such as Adilabad, Jagtial, Kamareddy, Medak, Mulugu, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda and Siddipet are also going to be affected.

How will the next 7 days be for the state?

The IMD has placed the state under a Yellow alert from March 24 to 30.

Thunderstorms and Winds: Isolated places across Telangana are very likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) throughout the week.

Temperature Dip: Maximum temperatures are expected to be below normal by 1-2°C during the next 48 hours, providing brief relief from the summer heat.

Upcoming Heat Rise: However, the relief will be short-lived. Following the next two days, temperatures are predicted to rise gradually by 2-3°C over the subsequent four days.
