If you never got a chance to explore them, then let us take you through one of the most talked about `Pearl Garlic’ popularly known as `Kashmiri Lehsun’. Pearl Garlic is distinctively different from the conventional varieties. More than anything else, this one is known for its huge health benefits. Unlike the other garlic varieties, Pearl Garlic can be eaten raw and doesn't have a strong smell. Eating three of these cloves in the morning will help cure and recover from Hypertension, Heart disease, Diabetes, Constipation, Gastric issues, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and others.
Pearl garlic does not grow everywhere. It grows only in the coldest places. In India, it is grown in Kashmir. Kashmiri farmers, who grow this variety, come to Numaish, the annual industrial exhibition in Hyderabad, every year to sell them along with many other spices, nuts, and other medicinal herbs. Waseem, a Kashmiri businessman, who owns a stall at Numaish said they sell two quintals of Pearl Garlic every year. He's been selling them here for 20 years now. "Since health benefits are huge, people buy a lot of garlic from us. This year too, we sold many kilos. Not many people know about this variety of garlic. It is important that they know what it can do. To everyone who comes to our stall to buy nuts and spices, I tell about the garlic as well. Many understand the importance and take a few kilos home," he said.
Pearl Garlic is characterized by its smooth, white, and round-shaped bulbs, which are usually small in size. Unlike typical garlic, it does not form multiple cloves or break apart easily. Pearl Garlic is milder than regular garlic and has a slightly sweet and nutty taste. It is a great source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help promote overall health. It contains allicin, which is an active compound that has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that can help boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and fight off viruses and bacteria. Studies have also shown that pearl garlic can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases due to its ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
Devanand is an active spice and nut seller in the Old City of Hyderabad. He imports Pearl Garlic from Kashmir and sells them here. "I have been selling it for many years now. Unfortunately, many people don't even know such a variety exists. Pearl garlic is antiseptic, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial in treating digestive issues, as well as providing relief from respiratory conditions such as colds, coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. People need to start buying it more often," he said. This garlic is available on various online shopping applications as well if you want to give it a try.
