Women safety: Hyderabad police, students launch drive to remove spy cameras from shopping mall change rooms

The initiative was launched on the occasion of Independence Day by Hyderabad's Commissioner of Police, Sri Kothakota Srinivasa Reddy, IPS, and Principal Secretary of the Education Department, Sri Burra Venkatesham.
Program Objectives
The newly launched program aims to identify and remove hidden cameras or spy cameras from public spaces, including female changing rooms and restrooms in shopping malls.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and privacy of citizens in public areas. A specialized team of female professionals, supported by NSS students, will carry out these inspections. Malls that pass the inspection will be certified as safe, with follow-up checks to be conducted periodically.
Leadership and Inauguration
The program was officially inaugurated at a ceremony attended by dignitaries, including the Commissioner of Police and the Principal Secretary of the Education Department.
Commissioner of Police Kothakota Srinivasa Reddy emphasized the legal frameworks in place to protect privacy. "This initiative is crucial for safeguarding the dignity and privacy of our citizens, particularly women and children, in public spaces," he said.
Principal Secretary, Burra Venkatesham, highlighted the role of educational institutions in raising awareness about such issues. "Our collaboration with NSS volunteers is a testament to the power of education in driving social change. These students are playing a vital role in making our city safer," he remarked.
Engagement and Awareness
The event also featured a flash mob and dance performances that engaged the audience, creatively emphasizing the importance of vigilance and safety. NSS volunteers who participate in the program will receive credits in their hour bank accounts, further incentivizing student involvement in the initiative.
Ongoing Efforts
The inspections will be carried out in all shopping malls and stores across Hyderabad, to cover every commercial area and ensure it is free from spy cameras. The program will continue until all targeted locations have been inspected and declared safe.
Several officials attended the inauguration, including Smt Udaya Sri, Kalyani from She Teams, and Dhana Lakshmi, ACP, along with Prasanna Lakshmi, DCP of Cyber Crimes, and other officers from the Panjagutta Division.
Hyderabad City Police and the Education Department urge all citizens to support this initiative, reinforcing the cityās commitment to creating a secure environment for women and children.
