Yellow alert for Telangana as IMD predicts thunderstorms, lightning till Monday

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squalls in several districts of Telangana till Monday, October 13.

A yellow alert has been issued for multiple regions in view of the prevailing weather systems.

However, there may not be a significant change in the weather in Hyderabad with clear skies to continue over the city.

Thunderstorms expected across southern and eastern Telangana

According to the IMD, districts including Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad and Mulugu are likely to experience scattered thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon through the night. The weather office warned that gusty winds and lightning activity may occur in isolated pockets.

Meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter, stated, “Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, combined with local heat and wind convergence, is triggering convective activity over parts of southern and eastern Telangana. Thunderstorms are expected to be short-lived but intense in nature.”

Avoid open areas

The IMD has placed a yellow alert over the state for the next few days, advising residents and local authorities to stay updated on weather developments. Under a yellow alert, isolated heavy rains and lightning are likely, and people are urged to avoid open areas during thunderstorm activity.

Independent weather forecaster T Balaji, known for his detailed regional updates, also predicted ‘scattered, intense thunderstorms’ in Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad and Mulugu districts between Saturday afternoon and late night.

He added, “While Hyderabad may remain largely dry, peripheral areas towards the east could witness cloud build-up and brief showers in the evening hours.”

Dry conditions in Hyderabad

For Hyderabad city, the IMD has forecast no significant rainfall or thunderstorm activity until Monday. The department expects mainly dry weather to prevail, with occasional cloudy skies. However, mist or hazy conditions are very likely during morning hours till October 13.

“Night and early morning visibility may reduce slightly due to the haze. Residents should exercise caution while driving during these hours,” Sridhar said.

Travel and health advisory

Authorities have advised residents across Telangana to plan travel with caution over the weekend, particularly in districts under the yellow alert. Lightning safety measures and temporary suspension of outdoor work during thunderstorm activity have also been recommended.

The IMD will continue to monitor the evolving weather systems and issue updates as required.
