Yellow alert: IMD forecasts thunderstorm activity across Telangana till May 6
Hyderabad: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued thunderstorm activity across Telangana until May 6.
A yellow alert has been issued for multiple districts, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds throughout the week.
Brief Relief in Hyderabad from Evening Showers
On Thursday evening, Hyderabad experienced a brief spell of thunderstorms and gusty winds, bringing some respite from the heat and humidity.
Areas affected included Kukatpally, Miyapur, Madhapur, Hitec City, Ameerpet, Sanathnagar, Borabanda, Jubilee Hills, Gachibowli, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, Attapur, Khairatabad, Abids, Mehdipatnam, and Nampally.
“Although the spell was short, the thunderstorm activity helped ease humidity and brought down temperatures temporarily,” said L.S. Sridhar, IMD Meteorologist, Hyderabad, speaking to Newsmeter. “More such episodes are expected until May 6, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.”
Temperature and Rainfall Observations
According to the IMD, Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5°C and a minimum of 25.6°C on May 1, with relative humidity at 66%. No measurable rainfall was recorded, despite the visible thundershowers in several areas.
Weather System Behind the Forecast
The current weather system is attributed to a north-south trough extending from an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan to north Kerala. The trough passes through West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Interior Karnataka, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
Forecast for Hyderabad
Next 24 hours: Partly cloudy skies with hazy morning conditions. Temperatures will hover around 38°C (max) and 25°C (min). Winds are likely from the southeast at 4–8 kmph.
Next 48 hours: Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are likely in parts of the city.
Statewide Forecast and Warnings
The IMD has issued daily yellow alerts for the following days:
May 2: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are likely in 30 districts, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Karimnagar, Khammam, and Warangal.
May 3–4: Alerts continue for central and northern districts, including Nizamabad, Jagtial, Adilabad, and Hyderabad.
May 5: All districts of Telangana are under yellow alert.
May 6–7: No alerts currently in effect.
Heat Persists Despite Rain Forecast
Meteorologists note that isolated thundershowers may not significantly reduce daytime temperatures. “While rainfall brings temporary relief, the prevailing heatwave conditions in interior Telangana will likely continue with maximum temperatures ranging from 41°C to 44°C,” explained Sridhar.
Districts likely to experience higher temperatures include Adilabad, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, and Medchal-Malkajgiri.
Advisory for Farmers
In its Farmers Weather Bulletin, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated or a few places across Telangana until May 7.
Public Safety Measures
Authorities urge residents to stay indoors during lightning activity and avoid sheltering under trees or near metal structures during gusty winds. Power outages and minor disruptions may occur in some areas due to falling branches or debris.
