Hyderabad: Uma Devi had been missing since 18 April. Her family launched a massive manhunt and posted 'Missing Person' posters on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and circulated the poster on WhatsApp as well. When NewsMeter reached out to her family earlier on Thursday, a family member informed us, "You can stop circulating her picture. She is no more."
Uma's photo and other details were circulated on social media requesting residents of the Secunderabad area to call the family if they find her. "We did receive enormous support from several people who we didn't even know her. They kept assuring us that she'd be fine and that we'd find her," her family said. They said they are grateful for the support.
Unfortunately, Four days after Uma Devi went missing, her body was found by the Malkajgiri police on Thursday morning. Her body was reportedly found beside the highway and she is suspected to have been murdered. "We don't know the cause of her death. The police have sent the body for post-mortem and we haven't received a report yet," her family said.
The 57-year-old went on her daily walk to the temple at 6:30 p.m on 18 April and didn't come home. According to her family, she was last seen one km from her home in the Vishnupuri extension in Malkajgiri. At the time she went missing, she did not have a phone or a wallet with her. She had three gold bangles on each hand and a mangalsutra at the time she went missing.
Malcolm Wolfe, a resident of Hyderabad who was circulating Uma's picture and details on Twitter said he was sad to hear the news of her death. "Yesterday night I was talking to Uma's daughter, discussing what I could possibly do to help," he said.
The cause of Uma's death is uncertain. However, the police are suspecting murder.
