HYDRAA frees 65000 sq yd `playground’ worth ₹100 Cr in Shastripuram
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRA) launched a major anti-encroachment drive and reclaimed a 6,500-square-yard playground worth ₹100 crore.
The operation took place in Shastripuram Colony, Rajendranagar Mandal, within an 188-acre HUDA-approved layout.
Despite the land being clearly designated as a 'playground' in the official layout, encroachers had illegally occupied the space and commenced construction.
Details of the Operation
During the drive, HYDRA officials demolished five multi-story buildings (G+3) that were in various stages of construction. Additionally, two single-room structures built by the encroachers were razed.
Officials noted that while they proceeded with the demolition of unauthorized under-construction blocks, they spared two other buildings in the vicinity where families were already residing.
Previous notices ignored
According to official sources, the encroachers had been selling plots within the designated playground area using "notary documents" for the last three years. This was done despite the layout clearly marking the land for public use.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had previously issued multiple notices and even passed speaking orders for demolition in 2024.
However, the encroachers ignored these legal warnings and continued their construction activities, allegedly intimidating residents who tried to intervene.

HYDRA Steps In
The action follows a formal complaint lodged by the residents of Shastripuram Colony to HYDRA. Upon receiving the grievance, HYDRA officials conducted a field verification alongside GHMC and Revenue Department officers. After confirming that the site was indeed a reserved public playground, HYDRA issued a final warning before moving in with heavy machinery on Wednesday morning.
With the illegal structures removed, the 6,500-square-yard space is now expected to be restored to its original purpose as a community sports ground, providing much-needed lung space for the thousands of families living in the 1,800-plot layout.
