Hyderabad: Revived Kukatpally Nalla Cheruvu ready for inauguration; HYDRAA inspects site

Hyderabad: Preparations are being intensified for the inauguration of Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally, with HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath directing officials to complete all arrangements ahead of the proposed visit of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy after March 6.

The Commissioner on Wednesday inspected the ongoing development works at the lake, which is among the six water bodies taken up under the first phase of HYDRAA’s lake restoration initiative.

Two revived lakes are up for inauguration soon

HYDRAA has undertaken the restoration and beautification of six lakes in the first phase. Among them, Bathukamma Kunta has already been inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

Officials said that Bamrukhnu Dowla Cheruvu in the Old City and Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally are likely to be inaugurated in the coming days as part of the continuing lake revival programme.

Focus on greenery and infrastructure

During the inspection, Ranganath instructed officials to undertake large-scale plantation of shade-giving trees around the lake and accelerate the development of parks to make the area more accessible and attractive for residents.

He also reviewed plans for setting up a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and held discussions with officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to ensure proper treatment of wastewater entering the lake.

Public response encouraging

The Commissioner said the transformation of the lake has already begun, drawing positive public response.

He recalled that when HYDRAA initiated the development works in September 2024, the project had faced criticism. “Today, the same people are appreciating the change,” he remarked.

According to officials, residents from five to six kilometres away are visiting the lake for walking, relaxation and recreation.

Plans for recreational facilities

Ranganath said more facilities would soon be added around the lake to enhance its usability as a public space. Plans include the development of children’s play areas, landscaped parks and open gyms for visitors.

Environmental and flood management benefits

Officials said the restoration of Nalla Cheruvu will not only improve the surrounding environment but will also play a crucial role in reducing flood risks and enhancing groundwater recharge in the Kukatpally region.

Once the full development is completed, the lake is expected to emerge as a major recreational and ecological asset for the locality.
