HYDRAA launches major lake restoration initiative to reduce flood risks in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has launched a comprehensive lake restoration initiative to reduce flood risks in Hyderabad.

The plan comes at a time when the agency is accelerating Musi river cleanup.

The plan, which focuses on reviving interconnected lakes across the city, is also drawing attention from global agencies like the Asian Development Bank (ADB), whose representatives recently reviewed the progress on the ground.

ADB team reviews HYDRAA’s lake restoration model

A delegation from the Asian Development Bank visited HYDRAA’s office and held discussions with Commissioner A.V. Ranganath. The team assessed ongoing lake rejuvenation works and their role in strengthening Hyderabad’s urban water management system.

Chain-Link Lakes Key to Musi Rejuvenation

Officials highlighted that several lakes in Hyderabad are interconnected and feed into Musi river. Restoring these “chain-link” lakes ensures that cleaner water flows into the river, significantly improving its overall health.

ADB representatives were shown before-and-after visuals of lakes such as Bathukamma Kunta (Amberpet), Bam Rukn-ud-Daula lake (Old City), and Nalla Cheruvu (Kukatpally), showcasing visible transformation.

STPs to reduce pollution load on Musi

HYDRAA stressed the importance of installing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at every restored lake. Treating wastewater at the source prevents untreated sewage from entering the Musi, reducing pollution and easing the burden on the river.

Flood mitigation through scientific planning

The restoration of lakes is also aimed at mitigating urban flooding. By improving water storage capacity and clearing encroachments from lakes and nalas, HYDRAA is working to prevent overflow during heavy rains.

Officials noted that past flood patterns have been mapped to identify vulnerable zones, enabling better preparedness and targeted interventions.

Early warning systems and nala expansion

HYDRAA has introduced early warning systems to alert residents in flood-prone areas. In addition, desilting and widening of nalas have helped reduce waterlogging in key areas such as Ameerpet and Secunderabad’s Patny region.

Groundwater recharge and environmental gains

Beyond flood control, lake restoration is contributing to groundwater recharge and improving the city’s ecological balance. Removal of encroachments from water bodies and public spaces is further aiding environmental protection.

Global Interest in HYDRAA’s approach

Impressed by the integrated model, ADB representatives have invited HYDRAA officials to share their experiences at international forums, positioning Hyderabad’s lake revival efforts as a potential global best practice.
