HYDRAA sets 2-month deadline to revamp Tammidikunta, Sunnam Cheruvu lakes in Hyderabad’s Madhapur
Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Saturday inspected Tammidikunta and Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur, directing officials to complete ongoing restoration and development works within two months.
The visit comes a day after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s surprise inspection of Tammidikunta, where he stressed transforming the lake into a prominent urban tourist and recreation spot.
Reviewing the works on the ground, the Commissioner instructed officials to develop the lakes into eco-friendly spaces that offer relief from urban stress, particularly given their proximity to Hyderabad’s IT hub.
Focus on green urban spaces
Ranganath emphasised increasing greenery around the lakes to ensure a cooler microclimate, noting that temperatures in such areas should be 3–4 degrees lower than surrounding zones.
He directed officials to create walking pathways, seating arrangements, parks, and landscaped green lawns to enhance public accessibility and appeal.
The HYDRAA Commissioner reiterated the Chief Minister’s vision of developing Tammidikunta into a serene destination where visitors can unwind, while ensuring environmental sustainability.
Reclaim government lands around lakes
The Commissioner ordered a comprehensive inquiry into government lands surrounding the lakes and instructed officials to reclaim encroached areas. He stressed that not “even an inch” of सरकारी land should be lost.
Officials were asked to verify documents submitted by occupants claiming ownership near the lakes, particularly in survey numbers 30 and 31 near Sunnam Cheruvu. Ranganath also reviewed land parcels located between these survey numbers during his field visit.
He cautioned that dumping of waste upstream of Tammidikunta could lead to renewed pollution, undermining restoration efforts.
Steps to address drainage and floodwater issues
Inspecting inlets near Sunnam Cheruvu, the Commissioner reviewed arrangements for channeling floodwater from Borabanda Basti and NRR Puram into the lake. Officials informed him that a diversion canal system—designed to separate sewage and stormwater—has been completed and awaits final linkage.
Local residents raised concerns about unsafe access roads due to pending drainage works. Responding promptly, Ranganath assured that the issue would be resolved within two days in coordination with municipal authorities, including installation of pipelines for smooth sewage flow.
Encroachments under high-tension lines to be cleared
The Commissioner also directed officials to remove encroachments beneath high-tension power lines along Sunnam Cheruvu and take steps toward road widening in the area to improve connectivity and safety.
