Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath has called for inculcating environmental responsibility among people from a very young age.
He said that early sensitization can lead individuals to healthier and more responsible lives. “Creating awareness on environmental protection during the student phase is crucial for building a sustainable future,” he said.
He was speaking at the `Model United Nations 2026’ programme organised by Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) at HITEX on Friday. The Commissioner highlighted the importance of institutionalising environmental efforts in campuses. Legislative Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar also attended the event.
Call for environmental clubs in colleges
Ranganath suggested that, much like cultural, anti-ragging, placement, sports, and international awareness clubs, educational institutions should establish dedicated environment clubs. Such platforms would enable students to actively participate in environmental protection initiatives.
He said these clubs could promote activities such as tree plantation, conservation of water resources, reduction of plastic usage, and cleanliness drives, thereby fostering a sense of responsibility among students.
Students key to sustainable future
Stressing that environmental protection is not just the government’s responsibility but a collective duty, he said meaningful change can begin with students. If every student contributes, it can lead to a visible positive transformation in society.
He also urged institutions to encourage greater student participation in environmental initiatives to ensure a greener and healthier future for the coming generations.
HYDRAA’s ongoing initiatives
Highlighting HYDRAA’s efforts, the Commissioner said the agency has been undertaking large-scale restoration of lakes, protection of natural resources, and removal of encroachments on government lands, parks, drains, and water bodies.
He revealed that properties worth ₹70,000 crore have been safeguarded through such drives. Restoration of interconnected lakes and protection of stormwater drains are being prioritised to mitigate flooding in the city.
Institutional support essential
CBIT Principal Prof. C.V. Narasimhulu briefed attendees on the institution’s academic and extracurricular initiatives. The event saw participation from students and faculty members, reflecting growing interest in global and environmental issues.
Ranganath expressed optimism that if environmental awareness begins at the student level, it would pave the way for a greener, more sustainable society in the future.
