Hyderabad: Police have arrested famous industrialist Amit Sanghi for threatening to kill his wife.

The accused was picked up from his Banjara Hills residence on March 28, four days after his wife Reeta Sanghi lodged a police complaint.

A criminal case under section 30 of the Arms act and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC, was registered against Amit Sanghi, President of Telangana Rifles Association.

Amit is the scion of the Sanghi Group of Industries. Acting on his wife's complaint, Banjara Hills police arrested Sanghi.

Investigating officer S Ravinder told NewsMeter that Amit Sanghi was taken into custody on March 24 following the complaint.

However, his friend Salilith Totempudi was allowed to take Amit home after furnishing surety that he would present him in the police station the next day. However, the accused tried to run away.

Police said Amit left to Sanghi Nagar the next day and bribed the villagers for concealing his whereabouts from the cops. He allegedly paid Rs 50,000 to villagers to remain silent.

Later Sanghi fled to Kolapur where his uncle Vikram Pilani resides. “To track the accused, the investigating team walked 7 km in Sanghi Reddy as villages had put up barricades. He later fled to Kolapur. We had to detain his friend Salilith Totempudi”, said a police official.

In her complaint, Reeta said Amit Sanghi armed with a fully loaded weapon barged into the house in a completely inebriated state. He then asked his son to keep the weapon in the locker.

“I called up my brother seeking help as I was alone with my kids. We asked Amit to leave immediately. I was scared, he would attack us. On reaching his car, Amit started yelling. He took out the gun and threatened to shoot me and then kill himself”, said Reeta.

The complainant noted that her son managed to snatch the gun and run away. "We called up the police and filed a complaint. The weapon has been handed over to the Banjara Hills police station”, she said.

Reeta later told News Meter that she has been living separately from her husband for the last three years. “I live with my two kids alone in the building where my parents stay. My marriage is on the rocks because of Amit's abusive behavior and alcoholism. We haven't met each other until he recently fell sick and I visited him in the hospital”, she said.

In 2017, Reeta had filed a domestic violence case against Amit Sanghi. The complaint had also prayed for the cancellation of his gun license. “I filed a domestic violence case against my husband in February 2019 but to no avail. The same is the case with my maintenance plaint filed in March 2019. I and my kids always live in fear”, she said.

The accused is the lone son of late Anand Prakash Sanghi, founder of the Sanghi Group of Industries. The accused earlier managed now-defunct Sanghi Spinner India Private Limited.
