Hyderabad: Cycling enthusiasts across India are gearing up for a transformative initiativeā€”Fit India Cycling Tuesdays. Starting December 17, citizens are encouraged to cycle for at least 30 minutes every Tuesday, whether for commuting or fitness.

The campaign, led by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, aims to address pressing issues like air pollution, traffic congestion and public health challenges while fostering a culture of cycling across the country.

A Nationwide Push for Behavioral Change

Mansukh Mandaviya will kick off the campaign in Delhi with a large cycling event involving 500 to 1,000 riders.

Simultaneously, rides will be organized in thousands of locations across cities, towns and villages.

Speaking about the initiative, Mandaviya said, ā€œCycling is not just an exercise but a way to improve our environment and reduce traffic. Fit India Cycling Tuesdays is a small step towards a healthier and greener future.ā€

A Grassroots Movement with Big Goals

The campaign is designed to encourage a behavioural shift by making cycling a regular habit.

Santhana Selvan, ā€˜Bicycle Mayor of Indiaā€™, described it as the start of a cycling revolution. ā€œThis campaign will transform cycling from a passion into a lifestyle. Itā€™s an opportunity to create large-scale change socially, environmentally and economically. With participation from lakhs of cyclists, including individuals and groups, the initiative is expected to create ripple effects nationwide,ā€ he said.

Partnerships to Strengthen the Cause

Bicycle Mayors across the country are working with local cycling groups to expand the movement.

Dr Bhairvi Joshi, BYCS India, emphasized the importance of collective action, noting, ā€œThis is not just about cycling; itā€™s about building a healthier nation through community-driven efforts.ā€

A Simple Step Towards a Larger Goal

The campaign urges citizens to embrace cycling for everyday activities. Whether commuting to work or enjoying a morning ride, participants will contribute to reducing pollution, improving health and easing traffic.
