End of an era: Vizag’s iconic Taj Gateway Hotel set to be closed

Visakhapatnam: It is curtains for Visakhapatnam’s iconic Taj Gateway Hotel. With its picturesque beach view, the iconic hotel is set to be closed, marking the end of an era for many in the city.

This landmark, a beloved destination for countless Vizagites, has inspired many to plan one final meal there before it fades into history.

The hotel, which has hosted numerous weddings, corporate events, and exhibitions, is scheduled for demolition on November 14.

After the announcement, social media quickly filled with heartfelt memories from residents—recollections of weddings, events, food festivals, and memorable dinners spent at the hotel. The Gateway’s legacy is rich with community experiences and treasured moments shared along Visakhapatnam’s coastline.

In 2018, Visakhapatnam-based Varun Group acquired the hotel from Oriental Hotels Limited, a subsidiary of the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), for ₹120 crore.

Across from the Gateway Hotel, the Varun Group also operates the Novotel Hotel in a striking building overlooking the sea. Now, Varun Group has outlined plans to redevelop the Gateway Hotel site, envisioning three new towers featuring a hotel, luxury service apartments, and an office block with world-class amenities. This project will require an estimated ₹600 crore investment.

Varun Group has also sought incentives under the 2025 Tourism Policy, which offers benefits for projects with investments over ₹250-300 crore, classifying them as “mega projects.”

Nestled against the scenic Bay of Bengal, the 5-star Gateway has been a top choice for business travelers and leisure visitors alike. Known for its popular food festivals, the hotel was a culinary destination in addition to being a symbol of Visakhapatnam’s charm.

Anupama, a Vizagite, shared her fondness for the hotel with NewsMeter: “My wedding was at the Gateway Hotel. I chose it because of its old, antique architecture, and I’ve always loved its annual seafood festivals. The Ming Garden restaurant there is my favorite. I’ll truly miss this place. I’m planning to have one last dinner there before it’s gone.”
