Hyderabad: Enjoy theatre, dance and satire at 19th Qadir Ali Baig Festival from Nov 6-10

Hyderabad: Hyderabadā€™s celebrated Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival is set to take place from November 6 to 10 at the Taramati Baradari Cultural Complex.

Now in its 19th edition, the festival, organised by Padmasri Mohammad Ali Baig, pays tribute to his father, legendary theatre figure Qadir Ali Baig, and is a highly anticipated event in South Indiaā€™s theatre calendar.

A blend of classical, satirical and modern theatre

The festival lineup showcases a range of genres, including classical theatre, satire, dance-theatre, storytelling and even stand-up.

Among the notable performers are acclaimed artists such as Ila Arun, Nadira Babbar, Ashish Vidyarthi, KK Raina and Rajendra Gupta.

ā€œThrough this festival, we aim to bring the best of theatre from around the world to Hyderabad. This year, we have a wide variety of performances that cater to both traditional and modern tastes,ā€ said Mohammad Ali Baig, the festivalā€™s curator.

Highlight performances to look out for

One of the standout performances this year is Miracle on Matunga Street, a satire adapted from Tom Dudzickā€™s play Miracle on South Division Street, featuring Ila Arun and KK Raina.

Ashish Vidyarthiā€™s stand-up act promises another highlight. Inspired by his popular character Vitthal Kaanya from the film Vaastav.

Nadira Babbar, the mind behind Farida, a love story set in Kashmir, expressed her anticipation for the event: ā€œHyderabad has a very receptive audience, and Iā€™m thrilled to share a story that resonates deeply with the beauty and complexity of Kashmir.ā€

International and regional arts fusion

This yearā€™s festival will also feature international talents, including UK-based storyteller Alexander Wright, who will present interactive performances based on Greek mythology.

The festival will pay homage to Hyderabadā€™s theatre doyenne, Begum Razia Baig, who co-founded and chaired the event for 18 years before her passing in March 2024. In her honour, Mohammad Ali Baig and Zila Khan will present An Ode to Motherhood, an open-air performance celebrating her legacy.

Workshops and master classes by theatre veterans

Alongside performances, the festival will host master classes led by theatre veterans Dolly Thakore, Nadira Babbar, Alexander Wright and Ashish Vidyarthi.

With a week packed with engaging activities, the festival aims to bring together theatre lovers from across the country and beyond.
