More than a dance: Essence of Tango school fosters soulful bonds among Hyderabadis

Hyderabad: Hyderabad, a city renowned for its rich cultural diversity, has recently been swept up in the captivating whirlwind of the Argentinian dance known as Tango. With roots dating back to the 19th century, Tango has found a new home in this bustling metropolis, all thanks to the relentless efforts of a passionate Tango dance community determined to carve a niche for itself.

The Tango community in Hyderabad owes its inception to the pioneering spirit of German researcher Thomas Falk, who introduced this Latin dance form to eager local enthusiasts. Following his return abroad, two of his dedicated students, Santak and Ketaki, took the mantle upon themselves and established the Essence of Tango dance school at Madhapur’s 100 Dance Studio last year. Their goal was simple: make the magic of Tango accessible to everyone.

Tango is more than just a dance; it’s a community with a profound connection to music and one’s dance partner.

Ketaki beautifully sums it up by saying, “The dance form is a passionate conversation between two souls and allows one to express a wide range of emotions.” She emphasises that Tango’s essence lies in its music, which predominantly harks back to the 1930s to 1950s era, giving it a unique and evocative old-world charm.

Santak adds, “Tango improves mindfulness, facilitates effective communication, and encourages self-expression.”

His introduction to Tango was serendipitous, as he stumbled upon a brochure about it at a university event in the United States. It soon became a means for him to cope with personal challenges and convey emotions that were otherwise hard to express.

To share the enchantment of Tango with a broader audience, Santak and Ketaki regularly organise Intro to Tango workshops every month. These sessions offer newcomers a taste of the elegance and passion that Tango embodies.

Additionally, the Essence of Tango hosts gatherings every Sunday, giving enthusiasts a chance to hone their skills and connect with fellow Tango aficionados. The crowning jewel of their initiatives is the monthly social Tango gathering known as Milonga, which provides a platform for experienced Tango dancers to celebrate their shared love for this dance form and build strong social bonds.

History of Tango

As the Hyderabad Tango community grows, it’s evolving into a close-knit family, making it easier for like-minded individuals to connect and share their enthusiasm for Tango. Classes routinely see 20 to 30 participants, and the city is gradually awakening to the allure of this beautiful dance form.

The history of Tango is as enthralling as the dance itself. Originating in the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires in Argentina, it tells the story of immigrants who, far from their homelands, created this dance as a way to connect and find solace. Tango is not just any partner dance; it’s an intense, passionate exchange between dancers, often resembling a tender embrace. Its distinctive character and music from the golden era of the 1930s to 1950s give Tango an unmistakable old-world allure.
