Hyderabad: Each June, Hyderabad commemorates the life and legacy of theatre legend Qadir Ali Baig with a special theatrical performance.

Continuing this tradition, the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation presents ‘Sunset-Sunrise’, a new play that explores the emotional gap between generations and continents.

This annual tribute has featured performances by some of India’s finest theatre personalities, including the late Habib Tanvir, Rohini Hattangadi and Shabana Azmi. This year, the production is led by Baig’s son, Padmashri recipient Mohammad Ali Baig, a respected figure in both stage and screen.

A contemporary family story

Sunset-Sunrise, written by Noor Baig, tells the story of Kunal, a successful entrepreneur based in the United States, and his mother Mamta, who lives in India. While Kunal navigates the demands of his life abroad, Mamta quietly longs for the return of her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

The play delves into the emotional weight of migration, family responsibilities, and the often-unspoken consequences of distance.

The narrative resonated strongly with its audience, particularly parents with children living overseas. The hour-long play builds to a powerful climax that reflects the internal conflict of head and heart faced by many Indian families today.

A stirring reception

The Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma, who attended the premiere, remarked that it was a wonderfully written play performed brilliantly. He said Mohammad Ali Baig stood out and moved the audience to tears with his gripping characterisation of a son living abroad.

Entrepreneur Ata Ullah Khan added that Baig’s performance is always a masterclass in acting and that his fluency on stage is a treat to watch.

A special salute to the Armed Forces

A special show was also held for the Armed Forces at the RSI Club in Secunderabad. The play received a standing ovation from a packed audience. Lt. Gen. Neeraj Varshney noted that the story connected with many in the forces and that the flawless performance was a meaningful gesture to their families.

A final production by Razia Baig

Sunset-Sunrise is particularly significant as it is the final play produced by Hyderabad’s cultural icon, the late Begum Razia Baig.

Directed and designed by Mohammad Ali Baig, the production features veteran actress Rashmi Seth as Mamta and Vijay Prasad as the father.

Their performances reflect a poignant portrayal of ageing parents who yearn for familial closeness in a rapidly globalising world.
