Qadir Ali Baig Theatre to stage acclaimed play ‘1857: Turrebaz Khan’ in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation is set to stage its internationally acclaimed play ‘1857: Turrebaz Khan’ in Hyderabad this Saturday.

The production, which had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and its UK premiere in London, will be performed at the Taramati Baradari Indoor Auditorium on August 23.

A forgotten hero on stage

The play is based on the life of Turrebaz Khan, a 19th-century Hyderabadi soldier who rose against colonial forces during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Known for his courage, Khan is regarded as one of Hyderabad’s earliest freedom fighters.

Set in a forest, the drama reimagines the last hour of Khan’s life before he was captured and shot. The story unfolds through his interaction with his captor, Qurban Ali, a man bound to the very establishment Khan resisted. Though both belonged to the same land, their opposing roles in history highlight broader themes of class, oppression, and opportunism.

International acclaim

At its Edinburgh world premiere, the play was hailed by global critics as a “Highlight of the Festival” and “A milestone in contemporary Indian theatre.” It also received strong appreciation in London, with Mohammad Ali Baig’s writing and performance praised on international platforms.

The production continues Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation’s commitment to presenting Hyderabad’s history and heritage on the world stage.

Cast and performances

Veteran Mumbai-based actor Masood Akhtar, who has previously worked with directors Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, MS Sathyu, and Rakesh Mehra, plays the role of Qurban Ali.

Mohammad Ali Baig performs the titular role of Turrebaz Khan, remaining bound in ropes throughout the play. The performance is accompanied by live traditional Indian percussion on stage, heightening the dramatic tension.

The production is written and directed by Padmasri Mohammad Ali Baig and produced by Begum Razia Baig.
