Bengaluru: Feeling bored sitting at home or tired of navigating through Bengaluru’s busy traffic? Karnataka offers countless options for weekend getaways—whether you’re drawn to hill stations, beaches, wildlife, or heritage sites.
This weekend, NewsMeter brings you a list of destinations just a 2–3 hour drive away from the city.
1. Nandi Hills
Famous as the best sunrise point, Nandi Hills lies about 60 km (around 1.5 hours’ drive) from Bengaluru. The ideal time to visit is early morning to catch the sunrise (gates open around 5:30 AM) or post-monsoon (August–February) for misty views.
Perched at an altitude of 1,478 m above sea level, Nandi Hills offers breathtaking sunrises, trekking, cycling, paragliding, and ancient forts. Don’t miss the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, a 9th-century Chola-era temple located at the foothills in Nandi village.
2. Skandagiri
Located 70 km from Bengaluru, Skandagiri is best known for its night treks and spectacular sunrise views. On clear days, the peak floats above a blanket of clouds, creating a surreal “sea of clouds” effect. The minimal light pollution also makes it a perfect spot for stargazing. The hilltop holds remnants of an 18th-century fort built by Tipu Sultan.
3. Ramanagara
Known as the “land of seven hills,” Ramanagara is a quick getaway ideal for trekking, rock climbing, and nature breaks without a long drive. It is also a pop culture icon, as it served as the backdrop for the Bollywood classic Sholay.
Situated about 50 km from Bengaluru, Ramanagara is also called the Silk City of Karnataka. Nearby attractions include:
Janapada Loka – A folk art museum showcasing Karnataka’s rural culture
Channapatna – Famous for colourful wooden toys
Savanadurga – Asia’s largest monolith and a trekking hotspot.

5. Kabini
One of Karnataka’s top wildlife and nature escapes, Kabini is perfect for a peaceful weekend—especially for safari enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and those seeking riverside stays. Located on the banks of the Kabini River and bordering Nagarhole National Park, it is about 210 km (5 hours by road) from Bengaluru.
Kabini is home to elephants, tigers, leopards, and over 250 bird species, including hornbills, kingfishers, ospreys, and painted storks. Visitors can choose between:
Jeep Safari – Smaller groups, deeper forest routes, and a higher chance of spotting big cats

6. Murudeshwar
A coastal jewel of Karnataka, Murudeshwar is famous for its massive Shiva statue, pristine beaches, and as the gateway to scuba diving at Netrani Island. It blends spirituality, adventure, and relaxation, making it ideal for a weekend or long-weekend trip.
About 490 km (9–10 hours by road) from Bengaluru, Murudeshwar features the world’s second-tallest Shiva statue (123 ft) and a 20-story temple gopuram with a lift offering panoramic sea views. Murudeshwar Beach is clean, scenic, and perfect for morning or evening strolls.
