L&T to pay Rs 20 lakh compensation to Ameerpet metro victim Mounika’s family

Hyderabad: Larsen and Toubro (L&T) announced Rs 20 lakh compensation to the family of the victim, who died in a freak incident at Ameerpet Metro station in Hyderabad. 24-year-old Mounika Reddy had died after a small plaster piece broke off from the station’s surface wall and fell on her head. The sharp edge of the piece fell on her head from about 9 metres height. She breathed her last while she was being taken to a nearby hospital by L&T personnel on Sunday.

Hyderabad Metro Rail MD NVS Reddy informed on Monday that the State govt had taken a serious view of the accident. Reportedly, L&T has also agreed to provide job to the deceased’s sister. L&T has come under sharp criticism for the incident.

Besides, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao instructed Metro Rail MD to assign independent engineering experts to investigate the matter thoroughly. The minister also asked them to take necessary remedial measures to avoid any unfortunate incidents in future.

In an official statement on Monday regarding the compensation to Mounika's family, NVS Reddy said, “Accordingly, L&T management held discussions with her family and amicably settled and signed an agreement to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh. Though the accident may be of a freak nature, KTR has emphasised that it needs to be taken seriously.

All station structures and facilities shall be thoroughly checked so that such unfortunate incidents do not recur. The reputation gained by Hyderabad metro for its high quality and standards shall be maintained, and safety shall be a high priority at all times.”

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, KT Rama Rao, on Monday, tweeted, “Truly unfortunate accident at Ameerpet metro station yesterday leading to young woman, Mounika’s death. My condolences to her family. Have instructed MD, HMRL to get the matter thoroughly investigated by independent engineering experts and take necessary remedial measures.”
