Man suffering from health issues seeks mercy killing in Kakinada

Satyanarayana fell from an electrical pole five years ago; His parents not in a position to afford the medical expenses

East Godavari: A 35-year-old man submitted a representation to the East Godavari District Collector at Kakinada seeking a mercy killing (Euthanasia) apparently annoyed at the health issues.

P Veera Venkata Satyanarayana, from Simhadripuram Village under Kirlampudi Mandal in East Godavari district, made this appeal to the District Collector D Muralidhar Reddy during the Spandana Programme.

As per reports, Satyanarayana has been suffering from severe health issues such as kidney disease, spinal cord injury and loss of muscle function in most parts of his body for the past five years.

Satyanarayana had joined and worked as a lineman, on a contract basis, for around seven years to lead his family. On that fateful day in 2014, Satyanarayana fell from an electrical pole where he was carrying out some repair work. He suffered severe injuries.

The accident led to both his legs and his spinal cord being paralyzed, which later on resulted in kidney disease.

"I have been bed-ridden for the last five years, and I failed to take care of my old parents. I am a burden to my aged parents, and so I am appealing to the district administration for a mercy killing and also decided to donate my organs to needy," said Satyanarayana.

Though Satyanarayana and his family members appealed to the TDP government in 2015 seeking financial help, the government hasn’t taken any step, they added.

Satyanarayana’s mother, Appanna Konda, said that they have been taking their son to various hospitals for treatment. But, the doctors said that the situation is out of control and they can’t rectify the problem. "My son is seeking a mercy killing which is why we met the district collector", said Appanna Konda in a choked voice and tearful eyes.

On receiving the appeal, the District Collector convinced Satyanarayana and his family members that a mercy killing is not required, by assuring to provide treatment and also include their family for financial support in any of the government schemes.

In the past, a couple from V Kothakota of Chittoor district had also approached the family court seeking permission for a mercy killing of their one-year-old daughter Suhana, who has been suffering from hypoglycemia since birth.
