Miracle birth: Woman gives birth to twins at 74 years

Guntur: In another medical miracle, a 74-year-old woman has become the oldest-ever to give birth after she delivered twins at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Y. Mangayamma a native of Nelaparthipadu in East Godavari district gave birth to twin baby girls through In Vitro Fertility (IVF) on Thursday, at a private hospital in Guntur.
Mangayamma married Rajarao in 1962. The couple for 57 years tried to become parents and left no stone unturned. Just when they had lost hope of becoming parents, their 55-year-old neighbour got pregnant through IVF.
They approached Dr S. Umasankar of Ahalya Nursing Home in Guntur. As Mangayamma does not have any life-threatening disease, doctors decided to use the IVF method on her. The doctors used the egg of another lady and the sperm of Rajarao to impregnate Mangayamma, as she had crossed the menopause stage and succeeded in the first attempt.
Taking her age into consideration and fearing medical complications the twin girls were delivered via caesarean on Thursday. Dr.Umasankar said that Mangayamma is the oldest women to give birth as per the data available. Mother and children are doing fine and there are no complications, he added.
