Chittoor: A murder accused, Anwar, 50, who was tested COVID positive and sent for treatment to Chittoor Government Hospital escaped while undergoing treatment on August 12. Anwar was charged with murder under Section 302 of IPC and was lodged in Madanapalle sub-jail during the last one year.

Last year, Anwar had stoned a person to death after a quarrel with him. He was disowned by his family members as he could not manage his anger and also due to his behavioural problems. Since then, Anwar had been living alone in Madanapalle.

On July 7, he was brought to Chittoor Government Hospital after he tested positive for COVID. On August 12, while the inmates were being served breakfast, the accused took advantage of the door being kept open for transporting food and escaped, the police said.

“Anwar was one of the inmates out of 40 others who are currently taking treatment for COVID at Chittoor Government Hospital. The police guard was present but the accused managed to sneak out of the ward. We are reviewing the CCTV footage of the hospital to track him down at the earliest possible,” said SI Mallikarjun Kumar, II Town police station, Chittoor.
