Friendship Day turns tragic: Canada returned student killed in road accident in Kondapur

Hyderabad: A young student who was out celebrating Friendship Day with her friends was killed in a drunk driving accident in Kondapur here late on Sunday night. The victim, Ashritha, was pursuing Masters in Canada. Her friend Taruni meanwhile received severe injuries in the accident.

The duo along with two other friends Abhishek and Sai Prakash was celebrating Friendship Day at Snort pub in Kondapur. They were returning home when the accident took place. Their car hit boulders on the roadside and overturned.

According to the police, Ashritha, Taruni, and Sai Prakash were classmates at ICFAI University. They knew Abhishek from college, too. Abhishek is still studying at ICFAI while Taruni and Sai Prakash work in private companies in the city. Ashritha had gone to Canada to study M.Tech.

The four met at the pub on Sunday to celebrate Friendship Day and got drunk. They left the pub at about 11 p.m in Abhishek's car. They were going towards Madinaguda. After crossing Myhome Mangala, Abhishek, under the influence of alcohol, started driving fast and lost control of the vehicle. The car hit some boulders and overturned.

Aashritha and Tharuni were severely injured and were taken shifted to KIMS Hospital in Kondapur where the doctor declared Ashritha dead. Sathya Prakash and Tharuni are undergoing treatment. A case has been registered against Abhishek under Section 304-II of the IPC and an investigation is underway, said G. Suresh, inspector of police, Gachibowli.
